Trip overview

This is the itinerary we build most often for first-time travelers from Europe and North America, because it answers the question 'what should I actually see in ten days?' without cramming or rushing. It starts with the Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur — India's essential introduction, then turns southwest to Pushkar, a small holy town on a sacred lake that most first-timers never reach and almost always call the highlight of the trip. From Pushkar we loop back to Delhi and, for guests who want it, fly onward to Varanasi — the oldest living city on Earth, where the Ganges runs between the world of the living and the world beyond it. We move entirely by private air-conditioned vehicle between Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Pushkar (with realistic drive times built into each day, not the 'optimistic' numbers some operators quote), and by short domestic flight between Delhi and Varanasi rather than an 8+ hour train, because on a 10-day trip your time is the scarcest resource. Every monument visit in this itinerary is timed against its actual opening hours and current entry fee for foreign nationals — sunrise at the Taj before the ticket queues form, Amber Fort before the midday heat, the Ganga Aarti at the hour it's actually performed. Shikha or a GoTrustelle host is reachable throughout, and the whole trip is designed around the questions European and American travelers ask most: is it safe, what do I eat, what do I wear, and how do I get from A to B without losing a day to traffic.

Day-by-day itinerary

1. 1

   Arrival in Delhi — Welcome dinner

   Land in Delhi and transfer to your boutique hotel in a central, walkable neighbourhood. Take the afternoon to rest and adjust — after a long-haul flight, we deliberately leave this open rather than schedule sightseeing. In the evening, a welcome dinner with your GoTrustelle host: a gentle, guided introduction to Indian food (butter chicken, dal makhani, fresh naan, a mild regional curry or two) with vegetarian, vegan and no-spice options clearly explained. This is also when we run through the ten days ahead, answer first questions, and make sure everyone has a working local SIM or eSIM sorted.

2. 2

   Delhi full day — Old & New Delhi

   A full day covering both faces of the capital, paced for jet lag. Morning in Old Delhi: the Red Fort, the 17th-century Mughal citadel of Shah Jahan (foreign entry ₹600; open 9:30 AM–4:30 PM, closed Mondays — we build the week around this), followed by Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, and a cycle-rickshaw ride through the lanes of Chandni Chowk. After lunch, New Delhi: Humayun's Tomb, the 16th-century garden mausoleum that inspired the Taj Mahal (foreign entry ₹550; open daily 6 AM–6 PM), and Qutub Minar, a 73-metre 12th-century minaret surrounded by ancient ruins (foreign entry ₹550; open daily 7 AM–5 PM). A slow drive past India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan closes out the day before dinner.

   Delhi → Agra by road — Agra Fort & Mehtab Bagh at sunset

   Depart Delhi by mid-morning for the drive to Agra (approx. 230 km via the Yamuna Expressway, 3.5–4 hours in real traffic conditions — we build in a rest stop). After lunch and check-in, visit Agra Fort, the red-sandstone Mughal citadel where Shah Jahan spent his final years imprisoned by his own son, gazing at the Taj across the river (foreign entry ₹650, ₹600 on Fridays; open daily 6 AM–6 PM, last entry 5:30 PM). As the light turns gold, we cross to Mehtab Bagh — the garden directly opposite the Taj Mahal — for the classic sunset view with none of the crowds of the monument itself.

   Early start: the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise (ticket counters open an hour before), and this first half-hour — soft light, thin crowds — is the reason we build the whole trip around it (foreign entry ₹1,100, plus ₹200 for the inner mausoleum; children under 15 free; closed every Friday, in which case this visit shifts to Day 3 afternoon instead). After breakfast, depart for Jaipur (approx. 240 km, 4.5–5 hours), breaking the drive at Abhaneri to see Chand Baori — the 1,200-year-old stepwell locals call the 'baori ki haveli', its 3,500 steps descending 13 storeys in perfect geometric symmetry (foreign entry approx. ₹300; open daily 8 AM–6 PM). Arrive in Jaipur by early evening and check into your heritage haveli hotel, with the evening free to explore Johari Bazaar's jewellery and textile stalls.

   Jaipur full day — Amber Fort, City Palace, Jantar Mantar & Hawa Mahal

   Morning at Amber Fort, arriving before the midday heat and tour-bus crowds: a Rajput hill fortress of mirrored halls and carved marble above Maota Lake (foreign entry ₹500; open daily 8 AM–5:30 PM). After lunch, the City Palace, still partly home to Jaipur's royal family (foreign entry ₹300, Chandra Mahal apartments extra; open daily 9:30 AM–5 PM), then Jantar Mantar, Maharaja Jai Singh II's 18th-century astronomical observatory of giant stone instruments (foreign entry ₹200; open daily 9:30 AM–4:30 PM). We finish at Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, for the classic photo from the street and, if you'd like to go inside, a short visit (foreign entry ₹200; open daily 9 AM–5 PM).

   Jaipur → Pushkar — Brahma Temple, the ghats & sunset camels

   A comfortable late-morning drive to Pushkar (approx. 145 km, 2.5–3 hours). Check in and spend the afternoon on foot: the Brahma Temple, one of the very few temples to Brahma anywhere in India (free entry; shoes off, respectful dress — modest, shoulders and knees covered), and a walk around the 52 ghats of Pushkar Lake as pilgrims light lamps on the water. As the sun drops, a short camel ride into the dunes just outside town for sunset over the Aravalli hills. If you're travelling on our 14–23 November departure, this evening coincides with the Pushkar Camel Fair — thousands of camels, traders, acrobats and musicians on the lake's edge, one of the great spectacles of rural Rajasthan.

7. 7

   Pushkar → Delhi by road, then flight to Varanasi

   An early departure from Pushkar (approx. 400 km back to Delhi, 7.5–8 hours by road — we start by 7 AM to keep this comfortable and build in a proper lunch stop). In Delhi, transfer directly to the airport for your onward flight to Varanasi (approx. 1.5 hours; several evening departures run daily). Arrive in Varanasi and transfer to your heritage hotel in the old city, chosen for its rooftop river views and walking-distance access to the ghats. If time and energy allow, an optional short walk to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the evening's Ganga Aarti; otherwise, a quiet dinner and an early night after a long travel day.    Varanasi — Pre-dawn boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath & the silk weavers

   5:30 AM: a private boat glides along the ghat line as the city wakes — pilgrims descending the steps in the half-dark, smoke rising from the cremation ghats, the light turning the water silver, then gold. Back for breakfast, then a guided walk to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of Hinduism's twelve Jyotirlinga shrines (general darshan is free; an optional Sugam/VIP darshan costs approx. ₹250 and avoids the queue; temple open 2:30 AM–11 PM, with darshan paused 11 AM–12:30 PM). After lunch, visit the Muslim weavers' quarter, where families have hand-woven Banarasi silk for generations — no pressure to buy, just to watch and understand the craft. In the evening, VIP-positioned seating for the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — the nightly fire ceremony performed at the same hour for centuries.

   Sarnath, then evening flight back to Delhi

   A morning drive 13 km north to Sarnath, the deer park where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment (archaeological park foreign entry approx. ₹300, museum foreign entry approx. ₹100, museum closed Fridays; site open daily 6 AM–6 PM). The 5th-century Dhamek Stupa still marks the spot, and the calm here is a deliberate contrast to Varanasi's intensity. Return for a free afternoon — a last walk on the ghats, a rooftop coffee, or simply rest — before an evening flight back to Delhi (approx. 1.5 hours).     Departure

    A relaxed final morning before your transfer to Delhi's international airport. Our team confirms your onward flight details in advance and stays reachable until you're checked in. You leave carrying the Taj at sunrise, a stepwell unlike anything at home, camels on a desert lake, and — if you added the extension — the oldest city on Earth still burning its eternal fire on the riverbank.
