Reiseübersicht

The Valley of Flowers is a 87.5 km² alpine valley in the Western Himalaya that the Forest Research Institute only properly documented in the 1930s, and UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2005 — yet it remains one of India's least-visited natural wonders, open to trekkers for barely four months a year. From late July through August, the valley floor turns into a continuous carpet of wildflowers: blue poppies, cobra lilies, brahma kamal, and over 300 other species, set against glaciers and 6,000 m peaks. This 7-day journey takes you from Delhi up through Haridwar and Joshimath to Govindghat, then on foot — there is no other way in — through Ghangaria to the valley itself, with a side trek to Hemkund Sahib, a glacial lake at 4,329 m ringed by seven mountain peaks and one of Sikhism's most important high-altitude shrines. We move at a comfortable pace, acclimatize properly, and stay in clean, simple guesthouses throughout. This is a trek for travelers who want real wilderness without needing technical climbing experience.

Tag-für-Tag-Programm

  1. 1

Delhi → Haridwar → Joshimath (overnight drive)

Early morning departure from Delhi by private vehicle to Haridwar, then onward through Rudraprayag along the Alaknanda River to Joshimath (approximately 10–11 hours total, with stops). The drive itself is part of the experience — the plains give way to foothills, then to proper Himalayan gorge scenery as the road climbs.

🏠 Guesthouse, JoshimathThe Alaknanda gorge road — your first real sight of the high Himalaya
  2. 2

Joshimath → Govindghat → Ghangaria (trek begins)

Short drive to Govindghat (1,828 m), where the trek begins. A 9 km trail climbs steadily alongside the Pushpawati River through forest and past waterfalls to Ghangaria (3,049 m), the last settlement before both the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Mules and porters are available for those who want them; our guide sets a comfortable, steady pace.

🏠 Guesthouse, GhangariaThe forest trail to Ghangaria — waterfalls and the first thin mountain air
  3. 3

Ghangaria → Valley of Flowers → Ghangaria

A full day inside the valley itself: a 4 km trail from Ghangaria leads into the Valley of Flowers, where the path opens onto a wide glacial valley floor carpeted in wildflowers, framed by the Rataban and Nilgiri Parbat peaks. There is no settlement inside the valley — only the trail, the flowers, and the glaciers above. Walk as far as your legs and the weather allow, then return to Ghangaria by evening.

  4. 4

Ghangaria → Hemkund Sahib → Ghangaria

The trek's hardest and most rewarding day: a steep 6 km climb from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib (4,329 m), a glacial lake held sacred in both Sikh and Hindu tradition, ringed by seven snow-streaked peaks. The gurdwara on its shore sits at one of the highest inhabited points reachable on foot in the Indian Himalaya. Pause at the lake, take in the silence, then descend back to Ghangaria.

  5. 5

    Ghangaria → Govindghat → Joshimath

Descend from Ghangaria back to Govindghat (9 km, mostly downhill) and drive to Joshimath. An easier day physically, with time to process the previous two days inside the valley and at the lake. Optional visit to Joshimath's ropeway or the old town if energy allows.

  6. 6

    Joshimath → Rishikesh (overnight drive)

Long drive back down through the Alaknanda valley to Rishikesh (approximately 9–10 hours). Stop along the way at scenic points on the river. Arrive in Rishikesh in the evening for a proper hot shower and a relaxed dinner by the Ganges — a soft landing after five days at altitude.

🏠 Riverside hotel, RishikeshBack to the Ganges — the trip's gentle final note
  7. 7

    Rishikesh → Delhi — Departure

Final drive back to Delhi (approximately 6 hours) or an early train from Haridwar on request. Our team confirms your onward connection. You leave with a trek most travelers to India never attempt — and a valley that's hard to describe accurately to anyone who wasn't there.

🏠 Last look at the foothills before the plains take over again
